About TOPP

Overview

The Twifo Oil Palm Plantation (TOPP) is a special agricultural project initiated by the Government of Ghana in 1977. Established with loan financing from the European Union (EU), Commonwealth Development Corporation (CDC), Netherlands Development Finance Company (FMO), and the Netherlands Government. TOPP has been a cornerstone of palm oil production in the country since work commenced in August 1978.

Located in the Twifo Ntafrewaso areas, approximately 62 kilometres north of Cape Coast and 212 kilometers from Accra, TOPP is strategically positioned in a region ideal for oil palm cultivation, benefiting from an average annual rainfall of 1,430 millimeters.

With Unilever overseeing operations and the Ghanaian government owning an 80.46% share, TOPP is a significant player in the country’s agricultural market. The oil palm Plantations covers 4,280 hectares of the estate. The first generation were planted in 1979 and 1980. TOPP has established itself as a high-yielding plantation, with an average yield of 16 metric tons of fresh fruit bunches (FFB) per hectare. The plantation is divided into two main divisions: Ntafrewaso and Mampong.

TOPP, demonstrating leadership in sustainable agriculture, keeps on boosting Ghana’s economy by using best agricultural techniques to produce high-quality palm oil. TOPP is a leader in the oil palm business and sets the standard for effective and sustainable oil palm production in the region, thanks to its advantageous location, good climate, and dedication to productivity.

Responsible Palm Production

With an annual production of about 20,000 metric tons of palm oil and 5,000 metric tons of palm kernel, Twifo Oil Palm Plantations Ltd (TOPP) has cemented its place as one of Ghana’s leading palm oil producers. A varied supply chain supports TOPP’s operations. It consists of its own estate, which provides 51% of the fresh fruit bunches (FFB), a structured Smallholder Unit, which provides 12%, and 37% of the total, which is fruit purchases from small private farmers.

The TOPP palm oil mill was initially built in 1984 and put into operation in May 1987, with a capacity of 20 metric tons per hour.

With the expansion of the mill to 30 metric tons per hour from 2007 over the years, TOPP is now able to process up to 100,000 metric tons of FFB yearly. To meet the increasing demand and improve operational efficiency, TOPP expanded its capacity to produce crude palm kernel oil in 2017 by constructing a new palm kernel plant.

TOPP is a prime example of how sustainable agriculture and technology advancements can coexist in the oil palm business. Thanks to its state-of-the-art facilities and close relationships with smallholder farmers. A consistent supply of raw materials is ensured by its capacity to process both estate-grown and outside fruit, and its enhanced processing capabilities establish TOPP as a leader in the palm oil industry on a regional and international scale.
